Hackx 2020

    Hackx 2020 is the Inter-University Hackathon organized annually by the Industrial Management Science Students’ Association (IMSSA) for the fifth consecutive time. This year Hackx continued with a Startup Challenge, creating a platform for more refined solid startups to emerge among the undergraduates in Sri Lanka. Hackx 2020 comprised 3 major events; the ideaX (initial idea pitching event), workX (webinar series), and Hackx final event along with the awarding ceremony. The competition was open to all the undergraduates of Sri Lanka, where 100+ applications were received representing over 18 universities island-wide. These proposals were screened to select 30 teams with the best innovative ideas. These 30 teams were given the opportunity to pitch their idea at ideaX, from which 08 teams were selected to compete as finalists alongside the top 02 MIT teams selected by the Intra-Departmental Hackathon; IdeaSprint 2020. The final 10 teams were given a period of 3 weeks to develop and implement their innovative ideas. During this period, each team was assigned with an individual mentor to support and guide them in the development phase. In addition to that, workX; the webinar series consisted of two technical workshops and a business workshop, while a marketing workshop was held to support the teams in grooming their ideas into worthy startups.

    Mr. Bilal Hassan; Senior Business Analyst at LSEG Technology conducted a session on Business Model and Sustainability. The technical workshops were “Power Apps & Microsoft Flow” by Mr. Prabath Mannapperuma; Partner Technology Strategist at Microsoft Sri Lanka and “Introduction to Azure” by Mr. Shameera Prajapriya; CEO & Principal Architect at Impact IT Solutions. A session on Marketing and Social Media was conducted by Mr. Artheeshayan Segarajasingam; Assistant General Manager at TAC Digital Marketing (Pvt.) Ltd. At the final event of Hackx 2020, the finalists delivered the final pitch of their products followed by a product demonstration showcasing their prototypes or the final products. The panel of judges consisted of Mrs. Pulani Ranasinghe; Founder of Loons Lab, Mrs. Nevindaree Premarathne; Project Manager at ICT Agency of Sri Lanka, Mr. Dinesh Karunathilaka; COO and Co-Founder of PayMedia, Co-Founder of DirectPay and SquareHub and Mr. Indika Aruna Dalugama; Cloud Solution Architect (Data & AL) at Microsoft Sri Lanka.

    From the 10 teams, 03 teams were selected as the winners of Hackx 2020; Team Electroleaf from University of Moratuwa emerged as the winners. Team Trash for Trade from Uva Wellassa University became the First-Runners up, and Team Maverick from Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology became the Second-Runners up.
